5 Places to Visit in Majorca

Also known as Mallorca in Spanish, Majorca is the largest island of Spain and part of the three-island archipelago that is known as the Balearic Islands. Majorca has a population of over 850,000 but this is known to radically increase during busy tourist times of the year.

One of the big draw cards for Majorca is its climate. Never consistently hot, even over the summer months of June to September it provides a relaxing holiday destination with temperatures topping out in the mid to high 20s Celsius (high 70's/low 80's Fahrenheit).

Majorca is commonly mistaken for a town or city, however the island of Majorca has many villages that make up the island. Some of the more noteworthy towns and villages are the following:

1. Palma
If you are planning to fly into Majorca, you will most likely come in via the third largest airport in Spain. Palma de Mallorca Airport is 8km from the city centre and services well over 20 million passengers a year. Many of Europe's discount and full service airlines have regular services here including Air Berlin, EasyJet and Ryanair among others.

With its positioning, Palma is a very touristy town, especially in the busiest times of the year. So it might make sense only to have a short look around if you are looking for a quieter vacation.

Out and about in Palma there is a Cathedral Area, the Old City in addition to Arab baths that paint a picture of Majorca's Moorish history.

2. Manacor
Situated on the eastern side of Majorca, Manacor is one of the biggest towns on the island. It is home to the biggest street market on all of Majorca that is held every Monday. It is also a town rich in culture with many different traditional and once off events held each year

Manacor is one of the towns where the beach only plays a part role in the town for tourists, if you are planning to visit make sure you check out an activity calendar.

3. Camp de Mar
Despite Majorca being so popular with tourists, Camp de Mar has managed to stay a cute little resort town. Unlike many other parts of Majorca, Camp de Mar has not been discovered yet as a package holiday destination. Most people who visit Camp de Mar make their own plans or own holiday houses in the area.

Camp de Mar is more intended for those looking for 4 to 5 star hotels where they can just sit on a beach and enjoy the hotel based restaurants and bars without venturing to far afield. Everything is in walking distance, but options are limited. It is the kind of place you go to just relax for a few days.

4. Alcudia
Also a quieter destination, Alcudia is in the northern part of Majorca and is a good choice for families who don't want to be around rowdy 18-30 holidaymakers. There are very clean, shallow waters at Alcudia Bay that make it also a very family friendly beach.

5. Palma Nova
One of the busiest tourist destinations in Majorca, Palma Nova is the oldest package tour destination on the island. So this does make it extremely busy during summer season, as well as being quite commercial. You will find a McDonalds, KFC or Pizza Hut just about everywhere. The resort caters for all ages, with lots of opportunities for late night parties for younger adults as well as swimming and family activities for other groups.
