5 Places to Visit in Majorca

Also known as Mallorca in Spanish, Majorca is the largest island of Spain and part of the three-island archipelago that is known as the Balearic Islands. Majorca has a population of over 850,000 but this is known to radically increase during busy tourist times of the year.

One of the big draw cards for Majorca is its climate. Never consistently hot, even over the summer months of June to September it provides a relaxing holiday destination with temperatures topping out in the mid to high 20s Celsius (high 70's/low 80's Fahrenheit).

Majorca is commonly mistaken for a town or city, however the island of Majorca has many villages that make up the island. Some of the more noteworthy towns and villages are the following:

1. Palma
If you are planning to fly into Majorca, you will most likely come in via the third largest airport in Spain. Palma de Mallorca Airport is 8km from the city centre and services well over 20 million passengers a year. Many of Europe's discount and full service airlines have regular services here including Air Berlin, EasyJet and Ryanair among others.

With its positioning, Palma is a very touristy town, especially in the busiest times of the year. So it might make sense only to have a short look around if you are looking for a quieter vacation.

Out and about in Palma there is a Cathedral Area, the Old City in addition to Arab baths that paint a picture of Majorca's Moorish history.

2. Manacor
Situated on the eastern side of Majorca, Manacor is one of the biggest towns on the island. It is home to the biggest street market on all of Majorca that is held every Monday. It is also a town rich in culture with many different traditional and once off events held each year

Manacor is one of the towns where the beach only plays a part role in the town for tourists, if you are planning to visit make sure you check out an activity calendar.

3. Camp de Mar
Despite Majorca being so popular with tourists, Camp de Mar has managed to stay a cute little resort town. Unlike many other parts of Majorca, Camp de Mar has not been discovered yet as a package holiday destination. Most people who visit Camp de Mar make their own plans or own holiday houses in the area.

Camp de Mar is more intended for those looking for 4 to 5 star hotels where they can just sit on a beach and enjoy the hotel based restaurants and bars without venturing to far afield. Everything is in walking distance, but options are limited. It is the kind of place you go to just relax for a few days.

4. Alcudia
Also a quieter destination, Alcudia is in the northern part of Majorca and is a good choice for families who don't want to be around rowdy 18-30 holidaymakers. There are very clean, shallow waters at Alcudia Bay that make it also a very family friendly beach.

5. Palma Nova
One of the busiest tourist destinations in Majorca, Palma Nova is the oldest package tour destination on the island. So this does make it extremely busy during summer season, as well as being quite commercial. You will find a McDonalds, KFC or Pizza Hut just about everywhere. The resort caters for all ages, with lots of opportunities for late night parties for younger adults as well as swimming and family activities for other groups.

Majorca Restaurants With Michelin Stars

Mallorca Restaurants with Michelin Stars

Michelin Stars are awarded by the Michelin Red Guide, the oldest and most well known European hotel and restaurant guide book. The guide was first started by Andre Michelin in 1900 and the first edition was a guide to France, with advice about travelling by car and on how to find good places to stay and have a meal while on route. The guides are now published annually and there is one published for France, Austria, Spain/Portugal, Netherlands/Belgium and Luxembourg, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Uk/Ireland, New York, San Francisco, Tokyo, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas.

The guide awards one to three stars to a small number of restaurants of outstanding quality. Stars are awarded sparingly. One star indicates "a very good restaurant in its category", two stars indicate a restaurant with "excellent cooking, worth a detour", and three stars indicate a restaurant with "exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey".

There are five Majorca Restaurants with Michelin Stars. Tristan Restaurant in Puerto Portals and Chef Gerhard Schwaiger has 2 michelin stars, Bacchus Restaurant at Read's Hotel and Chef Marc Fosh has one michelin star, Es Raco des Teix Restaurant in Deia and Chef Josef Sauerschell has one michelin star, Es Moli den Bou Restaurant in Sant Llorenc des Cardassar and Chef Tomeu Caldentey has one michelin star, and Plat d'Or Restaurant in the Arabella Golf Hotel in Son Vida and Chef Rafael Sanchez has one michelin star.

The Michelin Star rating has become a very prestigious award for any restaurant and its Chef, and the guide has been known to take away a star if a restaurant falls in quality for some reason. For the island of Mallorca to have five restaurants with Michelin stars is quite an achievement and a great complement to Mallorcan cuisine, its chefs and its restaurants.

Winter on Majorca is Fiesta Time

Majorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, is so well-known as to be practically synonymous with sun, sea, sand and summer holidays. Tourists from all over Europe flock to the Mediterranean, and about ten million each year follow the lead of the Spanish Royal Family and spend their holidays in Majorca.

Visiting Majorca in winter, on the other hand, can provide a good way to avoid the crowds and excellent chances to explore more of this beautiful island, particularly for travellers who are looking for sporting activities and adventures. The mild climate lends itself to year-round outdoor activity, so the popular pastimes of hiking, cycling, horse riding, sailing, diving and watersports - jet skiing is much loved - are still available in the winter months and generally more comfortable to take part in when the weather is a little cooler. Away from the beaches, the island boasts some stunning mountain scenery, pine forests and caves to explore.

Throughout the Christmas and New Year period, as with all the Catholic Spanish territories, Majorca has a wonderfully festive atmosphere with lots of entertainments and treats especially for children. And the party is by no means over in January - early in the New Year, Spanish children celebrate the arrival of the Three Kings (los Reyes Magos), with a huge parade in the evening, gifts and sweets being given the next morning. Then for a whole two weeks (14-29 January), the Balearic capital of Palma comes alive with celebrations of its patron saint, Sebastian - it's a perfect opportunity for visitors to see and take part in a traditional Spanish fiesta. The festivities include street parties with live music, bonfires and fireworks, fancy dress parades and huge outdoor barbecue feasts.

Prices for accommodation drop by around EUR20 per night in the 'low season' after the summer rush. Some of the most tourist-focused establishments may be closed during winter but a massive selection of quality hotels in Majorca remains open throughout the year. Along with the scores of three and four-star all-inclusive beach resorts - most suitable for large groups of holidaymakers - there are some exclusive, five-star designer hotels, aparthotels and around cities, converted mansions, manor houses and villas are found.

Many of these locally-owned hotels boast excellent cuisine, so are a good place to sample local specialities such as seafood paella, the spicy, warming Sobrassada sausage, wild mushrooms and olives, and the locals' pride, almond cake and almond ice-cream. There are also some fine local wines, mainly using the Tempranillo (grenache) grape and the local varietals Callet and Manto Negro.

Travel Tips For Majorca Holidays

Boasting one of the most popular tourist spots for all ages, Majorca is the ideal destination for UK visitors as flying time from most UK airports is no more than two and a half hours. The island can be divided into three parts - the Serra de Tramuntana rocks, the Serra de Llevant and the central plain (Es pla).

The island offers buildings, architecture and landmarks, as well as miles of coastline. Palma is the capital of Majorca with a long Moorish history. For beach lovers, Alcudia is a family favourite, famed for its beaches which include a 15km golden sand beach. Cala d'Or is quieter and is set in small rocky coves, with sandy beaches shadowed by pine trees.

Es Trenc has a superb beach with a peaceful location, three kilometres of white sand and azure sea.

Lletas also offers an excellent family holiday with fine, sandy beaches and a handful of bars and restaurants. Cala Fornells is a quiet beach resort, Puerto d'Antratx is located on the harbour side and the sandy beaches at Camp de Mar and Peguera are close to this location. Sa Coma is modern and quiet and has a fabulous white sandy beach. Former fishing village, Cala San Vicente on the north coast has sandy beaches leading down to beaches set between cliffs. There are over 90 beaches available, but Majorca also offers other attractions including a growing number of golfing opportunities.

On Majorca Holidays you can also visit Marineland's for their dolphin and sea lion shows. Children's beach is ideal for families and for those who want to travel around, an antique train travels the 17 miles between Palma and Soller. Beach Poble Espanyol, in Palma is a typical Spanish village showing different styles of architecture, with reproduction houses from Cordoba, Toledo and Madrid together with typical houses from the Spanish regions. For those who want to see some of the history of the region, Palau de l'Almudaina in Palma is a royal palace from the times of the Arab conquest.

Accommodation is mainly for the package-tourist, with a whole host of cheap and luxury hotels near to every beach and there is also a wide choice of fully equipped apartments, and aparthotels to suit any budget.

Xcaret Mexico

When visiting the Mayan Riviera in Mexico make sure to include Xcaret Mexico National Park in your plans. We were on a cruise that stopped in Cozumel and took the shore excursion to this spectacular place. They took us with a ferry to Playa del Carmen and by minibus to the site.

Location and concept

The park is located south of Cancun and very soon after you pass Playa del Carmen. The name of Mayan origin is pronounced as "Shkaret".

It was created on Mayan ruins in order to promote love and respect for nature. The site meaning "small inlet" in Maya, was for thousands of years and important ceremonial center and port in the Yucatan Peninsula. Today it is a recreational park proud to show to visitors Mexico's heritage and culture.

Getting there

Visitors arrive in many ways. On organized tours like we did, or individually using all kind of transportation like rental cars, taxi and buses that arrive here from Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Once there you receive all maps and information.

The entrance fee is moderate just to cover the expenses of the park. I'd like to mention that Xcaret Mexico offers 100 free entrances every school day to kids from Quintana Roo's school system. This shows their commitment to nature and education.

Once inside you will enjoy Water, Flora and Fauna, Exhibitions and Tours

Water
Underground rivers - I couldn't believe that my wife and I swam about an hour in the cool waters and got all the way to the end. I have to accept that was thanks to the current and the life jackets they lent us.

· Beaches - There are a few natural exotic beaches and inlets with white sand where you can just relax or swim.
· Coral Reefs - For those interested in Caribbean Snorkeling here they have the opportunity to see the natural corals without being professional divers.

Flora and Fauna

· Tapir Territory
· Bee farm (Mayan style)
· Bat cave
· Butterfly pavilion
· Deer Shelter
· Jaguar Island
· Spider Monkey Island
· Orchids Greenhouse
· Xcaret's Bromeliads
· Fish and Shrimp farm
· Exhibitions
· There are many exhibitions like:
· Archaeological Sites
· Ancient Maya Cities
· Mayan Village
· Scenic Tower
· And other extra performances during the day

Tours

It is much better to join one of the organized tours. The guides are superb and all licensed by Mexico's Tourism Department. Space is limited. I suggest you book your tour as soon as you arrive and pay your admission.

Shops

There are many shops throughout the park:

· Main Plaza - Handicrafts from all over Mexico including black pottery from Oaxaca.
· Souvenirs from the Aquarium
· Assortment of saints crafted with the traditional Mexican style
· All you need for your day at the beach

Are we hungry or thirsty?

There are many restaurants and bars with Mexican delight. You have your choice of elegant and casual restaurants, breakfast areas. All with the traditional Mexican dishes that we all like so much.

· La Laguna
· Gran Tlachco
· Dos Playas
· La Peninsula
· La Caleta
· La Cocina
· La Orquidea
· El Manglar

There are many celebrations going on all the time. If you come with a group from the ship, the time is restricted, but if you are staying anywhere in the Mayan Riviera, it is worth to come back on a second day visit. By the way the entrance fee for the second day is half the price. No matter which way you arrive to Xcaret Mexico, don't miss this once if a lifetime experience.

The Secret Treasure of Majorca

Reputations of a holiday destination can make or break it for many tourists, and once held impressions and opinions can be difficult to change.

There is definitely for example there is the image of Magaluf to consider. It's an area that attracts some but is a definite turn off for others.

And for holidaymakers who prefer peace and quiet to a walk on the wild side, Magaluf is set to become even more of a party magnet as 'Mallorca Rocks' has opened - sister hotel to the success 'Ibiza Rocks' only on the Med

Good for young and old to discover the Mallorca and Ibiza. For those who love their club and nightlife Majorca them rock in the middle of a Majorca holiday for many.

Mallorca parties could benefit hotels, stag and hen weekends as an alternative vision of Mallorca to Ibiza, to bring good income for the whole year from young Europeans to disposable income.

Flightson the island are plentiful, and with airlines for many regional airports in the United Kingdom, Ireland and continental Europe, students and other young people from low cost to see the numbers of the group of visitors in this age group was significantly this summer.

But for couples and families that this is not the 24 parties, holiday and are looking for a relaxing good sunshine, Mallorca is a good goal for them this year?

The answer is yes, it is a differentside to the island that's ideal, and if they choose the right location it would be hard to imagine they're on the same island as party loving Magaluf - but they would still get the good deal for their Majorca flights.

When looking at a map, on the north-west side of the island is Soller. And it is here that holidaymakers can escape to another world, and it's quiet enough to enjoy while having a good amount of activities going on, to be enjoyed year round.

A tram connects the port to the town, and Deia - another village ideal for family holidays - is close by, and there is a train that runs through the wonderful Majorca countryside to the capital Palma - a great day out enjoyed by many staying in Soller either in one of the hotels or Majorca villa holidays.

The port is a great little area to while away a morning or afternoon, with yachts calling in from across Europe. The harbour area has a good amount of restaurants and cafes serving a variety of food including local dishes all day, and there are also apartments to rent with sea views here for tourists.
